Goalkeeper Profile Of Matt Reis

With the MLS season drawing ever closer, I thought it was time to look at my favorite MLS goalkeeper. New England’s Matt Reis has been capped twice by the US National Team.

The Atlanta, Georgia native played his college ball at University of California, Los Angeles between 1994 and 1997 before being drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998.

His time in LA was anything but glorious, and he played only 16 times in five seasons because of established number one Kevin Hartman. He moved on to the New England Revolution after the 2002 MLS season.

He won the starting spot from Adin Brown in the 2004 season, and was the first goalkeeper to stop two penalty kicks in a playoff game. He has made 137 appearances for New England and has been present in the last two MLS Cup finals, which New England have lost.

He has played in his team’s last 6,300 regular season minutes, was nominated for the 2007 Best MLS Player ESPY Award, and was voted to his third consecutive MLS All-Star Game in 2007.

Reis has been named as one of the top practical jokers in the MLS. On April Fools Day 2004, the New England front office announced that they had signed a player named Luis “El Lobo” Fangoso, who turned out to be Reis in a wig and headband. On April Fools Day 2007, the Revs announced that they had resigned Fangoso for two more years.

But mostly, Reis is a professional in every sense of the word. He is fazed by nothing. His bravery in taking crosses through traffic and stepping up to not only stop penalties, but also take them, makes him a highly desirable goalkeeper in a growing league.
