Friedel & Keller Interview On Sky Sports
Steve Amoia advised me of the following video, which appeared over at EPL talk. It is a riveting view into what it takes to make it in the English Premier League by two of the USA's very best goalkeepers.
One of the key points that Brad Friedel makes is that there are 300 million people in the United States, though in reality 15 or so players have moved into to the top flight of Premier League Football. 80/20 Rule?
Carson rebounding from tough stretch to revive Villa's European hope
Last November, Aston Villa keeper Scott Carson faced the biggest night of his short international career. Not only did he have a chance to stake his claim for the #1 shirt for his country, but England's Euro 2008 hopes were on the line as they faced Croatia at Wembley.
It ended up being a nightmare for Carson and England fans alike, as he gifted Croatia an opener in the eighth minute, and six minutes later, he was beaten again. While England did come back to level the match, the night would end in disappointment, as Croatia scored a late winner to crush England's hopes of being at this summer's competition in Austria and Switzerland.
Standing On The Shoulders Of a Giant
Imagine standing on the shoulders of a giant? From those lofty heights you could go anywhere, and see everything. How does it feel like for Kasper Schmeichel standing in the gargantuan shadow of his father and goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel. In one part of your heart, an immense sense of security and certainty as to your possible future, on the other, an overwhelming sense of urgency, of needing to walk in your fathers footsteps.
Is Mark Schwarzer Still Wanted At Middlesbrough?
It must be hard to stand in the boots of Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Recently Middlesbrough extended his contract to only 1 year, as opposed to the 2 year terms he had put forward with his agent. After 12 stellar seasons with Boro, an extra year would have done well for Schwarzer given that the 2010 World Cup is nigh. Whilst, offers come in from Serie A clubs such as Fiorentina, Schwarzer remains in limbo as to whether to stay or leave.
English goalkeeper rotation in recent times
Last week, Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia further cemented Jens Lehmann’s place on the bench by signing a long-term contract extension. The details have not been disclosed due to a club policy stipulating that they will not reveal information about player contracts.
In the spirit of the occasion, I have decided to have a look at some uncertain Premier League goalkeeping situations in recent times and how they precipitated.
Ben Foster Shows Super Skills Against Derby
There is no doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson has been in the game long enough to have an immaculate eye for talent. Whilst watching his son play in an LDV Vans Trophy Final against Wrexham he spotted young Ben Foster whom was goalkeeper for Wrexham at the time (on loan from Stoke), and swooped down with a 1 million pound bid to sign the young striker (Source: Wikimedia).
In the years that have followed since his signing with Manchester United, Ben Foster has won many backers to be England's number 1 for many years to come. Recently, Foster arrived back into the Manchester United squad after an impressive loan spell with Watford. In Saturday's game against Derby, Foster displayed superb reflexes, distribution and pulled off two fantastic saves to keep Manchester United on top of the table.
When Enough Is Enough: Stupid Fan Strikes Athletic Bilbao Goalkeeper
There is a difference between the fan who has an intelligent passion toward their team and those who are fueled with a vindication toward the opposition. Great fans have a healthy respect for both teams on the field, where as fans whom are overly passionate about their own team can sometimes become drunk with a sense of pride. Unfortunately, in most cases too much pride can hurt, not only yourself, but your team and the game in general in the long run.
Top Saves From The Texas Pro Soccer Festival
Soccerlens writer Eddie Griffin did a super job of covering the Texas Pro Soccer Festival the past week. Eddie really did the hard yards in putting together some great articles together to give fans of the MLS an insight into the super effort that my mates Jason Chronkite and Chris Campasano pulled off at last weeks event.
Eddie travelled down to the event with his better half, and took the time to take some great videos and also super interviews with the stars of the MLS and coaches alike. Following is a review of some of the best saves during the Texas Pro Soccer Fest, and I have to thank Eddie for being so kind and giving our readers an insight into some great saves by some of th best goalkeepers in the USA.
How Do You Train Your Outfield Players...To Be You?
It was just one of those weekends in The Premiership that left ones head spinning with the ousting of many of the best teams in England. One match that stood out was Manchester United's mighty fall against Portsmouth, where Van de Saar, then Kuszczak were booted from the field, and none other than England defender Rio Ferdinand stepped into the formidable number one spot. Who else can you use when you have no other choice?
True goalkeeping class on display in Seville
What started out as, surely, one of the worst nights in Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Volkan Demirel’s memory soon turned into one of the best memories he will ever remember.
Olyroos goalkeeper banned for striking official
Sunday, the Newcastle Jets defeated the Central Coast Mariners 1-0 in the Australian A-League grand final at the Sydney Football Stadium.
During the last minute of this match, Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic was sent off for violent conduct after an altercation with head referee Mark Shield, who has been voted the top match official in the Australian A-League in both (2005/06 and 2006/07) seasons since its inception.
Vukovic appeared to strike referee Shield in the arm after he failed to call a handball on the Jets in the dying seconds that would have resulted in a penalty and, presumably, send the match into extra time. Striker John Aloisi was booked for dissent in the incident, but Vukovic was rightfully shown a straight red card.
Tottenham goalkeeping drama continues
On Thursday night at White Hart Lane, Paul Robinson started for the first time in ten matches (with the captain’s armband, no less) and produced a couple of match-saving stops for Spurs on the return leg of their Uefa Cup round of 32 tie with Slavia Prague.
England in need of a solid number one goalkeeper
Although Fabio Capello selected David James as the starting goalkeeper in England's recent 2-1 win over Switzerland, the new manager doesn't really have a first choice keeper at the moment.
"Only 38 percent of the players [in the EPL] are English. The pool is reduced. I have had to reinstate a 37 year old goalkeeper but I have spotted one in the Under-21s who is very interesting," Capello told Italy's Radio Anch'io.
The Under-21s goalkeeper that he was talking about is Manchester City's Joe Hart. It can be inferred from Capello's comments and actions -- this was not the first time he praised the young Mancunian -- that he may be selected for England's next friendly on the 26th of March in France.
FA Cup Fifth Round Goalkeeper News
The magic of the FA Cup was on display once again this weekend, with a number of notable performances -- some for the right reasons and some for the wrong reasons.
UEFA Cup Goalkeeper News - 15/2/08
The UEFA Cup has been known in recent times as the "Loser's Cup" because of the prominence of the UEFA Champion's League. The excitement of the competition is often overshadowed by the bigger names in the Champion's League, but on Thursday night in Europe, there were a number of incidents that attracted the attention of the major British media (as if they needed something else to write about).
Capello and England: Nothing Wrong With a Slap On The Wrist
Parenting groups from all around the globe will now come down like a hail of bullets on Keeper Skool for this article's title, but it's true. David James will now be gifted the chance to be England custodian under Capello's guidance, and he is finding that the task master attitude can be quite alarming, but on the whole beneficial for an England team in sore need of improvement.
